Maio in Cape Verde belongs to the most eastern part of the Sotavento Islands. Located south of the beautiful Boa Vista Islands and in the east of Santiago, two of the 10 Cape Verde Islands, Maio was named by the Europeans after having discovered it in 1460. Salt collection was the main trade of the islanders. Agriculture and grazing were the other activities, though none of these industries are thriving now. The main town on the island is the Vila do Maio or Porto Ingles. This also happens to be the site of the airport. Maio is also known for its lush trees that are an uncommon feature in Cape Verde.
The landscape is formed of mountains in the east, called Monte Penoso, plain salt fields in the very north, and, bays such as Galeao and Santana towards the north. There are several beautiful golden beaches along the coast of Maio.
Maio properties are wonderful and quaint. With hardly any commercialization, this town makes for a perfect retreat or holiday home destination. You can buy your own piece of land, or buy an existing property and modify it to your requirements.
