For desert island bliss, you cannot do better than the Cape Verde group of islands, 450km off the coast of Africa. They combine a hint of exotic Creole culture, ease of access, by means of direct, low-cost flights leaving from the UK and other destination and an extremely agreeable climate of between 20 and 28º. Which is perhaps why they appeared on the list of top ten destinations in an Expedia survey for 2007. No wonder, with its crystalline waters, seemingly endless stretches of gorgeous, sandy beaches and its picturesque little coves. The main town, Santa Maria, is a lively centre for Capverdian culture, with its typical bars and restaurants offering live local music.

As a bustling beach resort, in full economic upswing, Sal represents a sure-fire investment for holiday rentals. Investments in the island took an upturn after Astraeus Airlines began flying to Sal last year. The trend is set to continue with the inclusion of Boa Vista in the list of direct flights from London, Gatwick.
