Fogo is a volcanic island in the Sotavento group of Cape Verde islands, hence Fogo is the Portuguese word for fire.

Mount Fogo is the most prominent mountain of the group of islands, rising to 3,000 meters above sea level. The volcano has been historically active, last erupting in 1995. A small village, called Chã das Caldeiras, is located at the base of the volcano, and the residents are periodically evacuated during eruptions.
